Memorial Day Compost Bin

Joyce's compost corner took a turn for the worse last week when the electric company came and dug half of it up to get to an electrical box buried underneath it. I guess the soil in that corner of the yard has built up about 10 inches since they put the electric service in, and with the compost on top of the soil it was quite a bit of work.

The good news is we had a trailer full of treated wood rescued from our friends who needed to clean out their garage a few months ago because of a move. Joyce found plans for a three section compost bin, but I had to modify the design to use the wood I already had. Not too hard.

Once I figured out how to build one of the sections the rest went together fairly quickly. The only real problem was my nail gun blew an o-ring so I had to put the last part of the bin together with hand-nailing and screws.

I think this is a dramatic improvement over what was there before. And, the good news is, I was able to build it entirely with leftover material.

Once the bin was built, I had quite a mess to clean up. Ugh!
